1997 Burley Samba CL score!
One of those cool "I just want to get it to someone who will use it" sellers-- I had a nearly new Trek 7200 hybrid and offered it as a trade. Seller was interested, we worked out the +cash factor, and home I came with a real tandem.
It must weigh less than *half* of our 7 speed cheapo special cruiser!
Here are his photos from the ad--
New Shimano Tandem Hubs-- seller had bought the bike w/ plain MTB wheels...
Laced to 40h Salsa Gordo hoops:
New Sora FD and Sugino cranks/rings--
A nice addition to our other big bikes!
Happy 5 de Mayo!

I'm looking at BikePedia listings and it could be a 96/95/94 etc. They were all black. I'll take a closer look at the grip shifts to determine the actual year.

Nice find! We enjoy our Burley.
..... I am intrigued by your research. Our bike is the same color and decal scheme as yours, but reads Rock N Roll on the top tube. Some of the components were obviously swapped out by the previous owner when he converted it from flat bar to drop bar. The components that remain indicate it being a 1996, but Bikepedia lists the color as purple that year.
https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...Roll&Type=bike
I have sort of deduced that they might have been available in more than the one color listed at Bikepedia.
Here's ours being shown by my lovely stoker
Judging by your great pictures I don't need to tell you this, but enjoy your bike!!
Cheers!

I was clicking through the BikePedia stuff, and I'm thinking that the Rhumba, Samba, and Rock n Roll were all on the same frame, but had different components to the build.
Then there's Zydeco and Duet! Well, we're a musical family, so it's nice to have a musical bike!
Here we are last summer...
Update to the rebuild: got a seatpost at the shop. Riding the bike there seatless got some funny comments. So then I happened to be in town when the bike polo game was on, and dropped by with my still seatless Burley. I'd never been. They dug the bike. During a break, I grabbed a mallet and tried bike polo for the first time. On the tandem! The thing's still in pieces and I'm having fun with it!

I was alone on the pitch... lol. The guys/girls were taking breather. That is, they were drinking beer by the cars between 5 point games.
I really like your drop bar conversion. I will put bar ends on first and see how it goes-- I do prefer drops. One issue is that the stem is just right for me with flat bars-- I'd need something higher with drops, since I ride a 62-67 cm singles, and don't want a crazy seat to bar drop on a tandem.

That will give a wider choice of threadless stems. One with a positive rise might get you to where you need to be.
Keep us posted!
