Looking for souther tier aca maps

Hey guys, I'm planning a southern tier trip in the next few months and before I shell out the hundred or so bucks on the aca website I figured i'd ask if anyone has a set that's gathering dust and willing to sell? Thanks!

Cheap? Dont want to pay for ACA maps? Just write each State DOT and ask for any Bike Maps and other Highway maps they print.

Oregon has a state wide recommended roads for cycling Map and we Get the ones for the Oregon Coast bike route.

In the next few months? Hmmm...are you planning to cross the low deserts of Arizona and California, and what time of year are you planning to take that "camino de la muerte"?

If you look at the ACA map sections on their website, they show enough detail that you could make your own guides using road maps (DeLorme, for instance, or even Google maps). I've done this before and it worked pretty well.

Have a look at this thread - https://www.bikeforums.net/touring/53...gle-earth.html

kmz files don't work as easily with google maps as they used to.

No paper but you can view & download the route map from my (free) site: bikegpx.us

to view:
  • select group --> Adventure Cycling
  • select select route --> Southern Tier

also then:
  • Satellite View: click satellite on left-middle of screen
  • Street View: drag the little-man-icon from the bottom right to the point on the route you want to see
  • To Download GPX: click download

Or you can acknowledge the time and effort that went into creating the maps and support ACA by buying them direct.

Willing to pay for the maps, it all goes to a good cause. But I figured if I could save a few bucks why not. Thanks for the tip I'll check that out!

"Next few months" is a bit premature, shooting for novemberish. Early planning stages but yes most likely low desert. Any advice?

They sell guides not routes. Their guides are fine buy them. Mine are just easy to download GPX files. I don't sell them and neither do they.

November is one of the most delightful times of year to tour the low desert. The days are usually still pleasantly warm, the nights are cool, and you don't get the windstorms that can hit at times in the winter and spring. The only downside is the short days.

You can also cross San Diego County via its "Northern Tier" route, either starting from the North County (Oceanside), or leaving the ACA route in Lakeside and heading up through Ramona and Julian to get to Anza-Borrego State Park. I live in SD county, have done both routes numerous times, and would prefer the northern option, myself. Why? Still scenic (IMO), some nicer campgrounds, and it avoids the possibly very bad pavement of the low desert section of the Southern Tier route that parallels I-8. You don't get the boulder jumbles of the In-Ko-Pah mountains as you descend I-8 into the Salton trough, but the northern descent route is quite scenic, too.

Looks like a very useful site, but I seem to be missing something. When I select a particular path it shows up fine on the map but I'm not getting the download to work. Using Firefox and clicking on 'Download GPX' doesn't appear to do anything while using Chrome I do get a file downloaded but it doesn't have the trackpoint information in it. I've been able to get the .gpx files directly from the ACA site but you also have quite a few additional routes and trails that would be nice to have if I could download them.

Sweet that makes me more confident of my planning thanks! Yeah the short days will be a drag but eh, better that than 100 deg temps. Anza sounds like a good detour i might do that.

The Genuine maps are furnished with a waterproof result.

Another resource is Map Libraries at Universities , Part of the Geography Department.

Loving maps, I spent many hours in the one at the U.of O. in Eugene.
