10-year old's first triathalon - Limiting gears?

My 10-year old will be competing in his first triathalon this Sunday, and he'll need to navigate the course without my help. He has a Fuji 650 Ace upgraded to a Sora 9-speed. I'm a little worried that he still doesn't understand the fine points of shifting, and will either drop his chain, or ride in some goofy combo (like small ring/small cog).

I'm thinking of limiting his access to gears by changing the bike to a 1x9 and possibly even limiting the rear deraileur to the middle 7 cogs (1x7). The course should be relatively flat, and he's a strong rider in all types of terrain on his BMX bike.

Does this sound like a reasonable approach, or am I over thinking this?

If it's an official race you might need to block out certain of his gears anyway. Aren't there Junior's restrictions on total gear inches?

This is just a local club event - there's nothing in the rules regarding gearing. As long as he has a helmet and air in the tires, he's good to go. I'm sure there will be some kids with real road bikes, but I'm guessing most will be riding Wall-Mart fodder. Hmm - a bell might be a good idea, along with some rules for safe passing ediquette.
