The brake may ease them, I go on a ride that's perfectly accepting of fixed gears but not brakeless riders because it is a training kind of ride. It sucks that there is some stigma towards fixed gear riders. I've gone on club riders with my fixie and it seemed like they were trying to drop me the whole time, only to be accepting at the end of rides, but none of that would have happened if I showed up on my geared bike
