Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I ride by myself cuz I can ride when I want, where I want, at the pace I want and don't have to keep stopping for other people needing to fix flats, relieve themselves and otherwise break up the rythm of the ride. The only time I ride with other people is when I'm racing.
Feeling pretty full of yourself? See the time difference in between my first post and my second one? Well, the first one was on my way out the door after I found out my riding buddy was bailing on me. The second one was after I finished my 47 mile solo ride.

In Tokyo I never had problems with the Cops running lights.

Do you mainly go out on track bikes or do you hit the road with a road bike frequently?
Bummer! Hamstrings can be a PITA, so definitely give it time. My main problem is my back so I've had to replace squats with leg presses. This time of year I mainly ride road FG and MTB/cross but I do more RB geared on the road once I get on the track in the spring. I do all my short interval training on the track bikes and use the road bike mainly for long endurance, group riding and road races.

Chill out, dude! You're getting too dang uptight about all this. Sorry I pissed you off, geez.

But now I am in central Tokyo (next to Tokyo Tower) so riding is harder because there are so many lights, I find I can ride for a couple of minutes max before I have to stop at lights. It is frustrating, I can't get into a good rhythm. What do other city riders do?
I ride until I am out of town, then ride some more. Or if weather/light/time etc won't let me out of town I ride rollers for a few hours.

I'm neither uptight nor pissed off. Simply pointing out that you telling me that I'm glued to a computer when I should be out riding is pretty presumptuous and unneeded.

Calmer than you are.

So I'm pretty much riding solo 99% of the time. This makes finding new routes/rides both more enjoyable (just being nowhere, alone) and kind of a bummer (just being nowhere, alone). What do you do?
I feel ya. I wish I had someone who rode fixed and rode fast.
Most fixed riders I see are freestylin' and lots of roadie guys trying to look fast with all their fancy gear and expensive bikes.
However, I don't think the speed thing is exclusive to just the roadie crowd or the fixed crew, so I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can find that one someone who can ride/train with you, and be cool at the same time
(if you come by sf, drop me a note and we'll ride some time )

Try looking for a local fixed forum? (IE DavisFixed, SJFixed, SFFixed, LAFixed)

Up here in Davis, we're trying to do an upsergence of riding fixed for fun, speed, and distance. I'm actually about to go on a 30 mile ride with about 8 other kids, and it's pretty cool. Just gotta find that right group eh?

If one doesn't exist, create one? The current forum went from no group rides, to a Sunday trick session -> Wed night bike ride -> Monday fast mid-day ride -> Saturday slow ride -> And a thread dedicated to riding whenever you feel like and want to try and pick people up.
