It's all about what you want to achieve. If you want to be a skinny cyclist then by all means cycle only. In my opinion I think it is better to have a well rounded physique. Will that be detrimental to a pure cyclist? Probably although if you watch some of the weight training videos of Lance it didn't seem to hurt him any.
Although he says himself in his book he was able to be a much more competitive cyclist after his cancer partly because he lost quite a bit of upper body muscle mass he had gained through triathlon training competition pre cancer.
