The crank bearings were stiff because, in my worn-out condition at the time of installation, I missed one "little"detail -- the outer seal from the old left-side external BB had stayed on the crank axle, binding up the whole works. During my planned swap-out today, I found it; now the crank spins as freely as it ever has since I've owned it.
Duh, DOY-DOY, I'm a dumby!
