Bikes: 1940s Fothergill, 1959 Allegro Special, 1963? Claud Butler Olympic Sprint, Lambert 'Clubman', 1974 Fuji "the Ace", 1976 Holdsworth 650b conversion rando bike, 1983 Trek 720 tourer, 1984 Counterpoint Opus II, 1993 Basso Gap, 2010 Downtube 8h, and...

Last year my kids had a complicated schedule of vacations that didn't overlap with one with one another's, nor with my wife's, which gave me an opportunity to cook up a complicated tour that left very little flexibility about the timing. If the weather didn't cooperate, we had no wiggle room. All in all it was a success, but I'd rather not do it the same way again. In fact, that tour began exactly a year ago today, bringing my daughter and me to The Historian's house, where we spent the first night.

Anyway, this year is different. My daughter had to be satisfied with a 45 mile day trip, but that's not bad for a ten year old on a three speed bike, right? Next week and the week after that, my son has two weeks off, in which I plan to plan something, weather permitting. It's tempting to plan something now, but I'm going to wait until I see three or four days of good weather coming up on the forecast, and then work with it. So I look at the weather every day... but I don't see it yet!
