Modulus was a pretty good Nishiki model. Typically a mid-level or better Nishiki. I'd need pics to help narrow down the age, but I'm betting the tubing is double butted chromoly steel, probably Tange, but I'm not sure what grade Tange. In 1988 the Modulus had a very cool tri-color blue/white/purple that faded into the next color. IMHO, that bike has a really nice frame. If it's a good fit, you should plan on keeping it a LONG time.
I have a 1986 Nishiki Prestige that I've upgraded with brifters and deep V wheels. It would cost over $1000 to buy a similiar bike new today.
