Hi MTBike1, welcome to forums. I agree with the hardtail. most people do not really need rear suspension IMHO, esp beginners.

I would suggest 3 things:
if you can add 100 to your budget check out your local bikeshop for their base models.
see if there is a BF bike reseller near you. he may have something used but better for about the same price
if you but the schwinn or pacific see if you can get it in the box and have your LBS build it. it will cost a bit extra but is often worth it. while alot of 'department store' bikes may be built by professionals those guys/girls often get paid by the piece so sometimes don't always lube everything.
