FWIW that is how I have always done it, since I started clipless on the first generation Look pedals circa 1986. Just feels easier that way to me.

(edit: I have a different bike that I use as a commuter and for awhile was using a frame pump mounted along the seat stay...but when unclipping I kept knocking the stupid pump out with my heel! So I have relocated it.)
