Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another useless right foot left foot thread.

This is something you should try. It is a good thing to know your limitations. On this mornings ride while thinking about some of the BF topics from yesterday, I wanted to know if I could un-clip both inside and outside with both feet. Of course we all have are strong directions mine are un-clip inside with my left foot first and then un-clip outside with my right. I am able to easily un-clip inside with my right foot but it is a struggle to un-clip outside with my left. I am right handed. I don't know if this will be useful information in the future but it is interesting...at least to me.

Hmmm...can't say as I've ever even considered that there was an "other" way. I'm right handed also, but un-clip outside with both feet. I usually only un-clip with the left foot unless I'm getting off the bike. Next ride out I'll have to try un-clipping inside.

Heel moves out to unclip on both sides. Right handed, always unclip the right foot for a stop. I can re-engage the cleat more naturally with my right foot (meaning I don't have to look or struggle) but do have to avoid the chainring tattoo.

After reading this I think I've figured out why so many people fall with clipless.

You un-clip at the twelve o'clock so the only thing you will hit is your seat stay. I have been doing this for years and never had a problem. Sometimes I worry that I will wear a grove in my CF. I think I will do an inspection right now.

FWIW that is how I have always done it, since I started clipless on the first generation Look pedals circa 1986. Just feels easier that way to me.

(edit: I have a different bike that I use as a commuter and for awhile was using a frame pump mounted along the seat stay...but when unclipping I kept knocking the stupid pump out with my heel! So I have relocated it.)

And yes they do...especially if you have zero float.

Edit: I sport Speedplay Zeros.

They can't possibly unclip in, the plate hits the spindle.

I did some experimentation, and if set so that it is fully (or possibly nearly) heal out with zero float, I could release it in. BUT, if you have it set to be neutral or heel in, then the spindle will hit the plate. It's not just a matter of being hard to do, it just physically cannot rotate enough to release. I have mine centered with zero float, so mine cannot release in.

some of you definitely "think" too much about clipping in and out. after a while using clipless pedals, it became second nature to me, i dont think about it at all. - like driving a stick shift car, i dont ever think: "coming to a stoplight, dont forget to clutch, dont forget to clutch, dont forget to clutch....stall"

Okay...I see what you are saying. If you are set up with any toe-out at all then clipping out heel-in may not be possible with Zeros. I pedal exactly neutral, no toe-out or toe-in and I am able to unclip heel-in with both feet.

You are the man!

I have mine completely neutral, the spring exactly centered between the screws and 0 float. After your post I experimented with several settings, and the only way I could get it to release in was if was set extremely toe-in. It may matter which pedal model you have too, I don't think all the spindles are the same size. Since it's the spindle that is getting in the way, a narrower spindle may do the trick. I have the Ti zeros.
