All I can say is, with the same conditioning and experience, the rider with the gears, proper, non-cutdown bars and bottles will always win the big climbs! Now you can't argue with that!

I can argue with that. 40X13 gets me up hills faster than the roadies I ride with. I also find that, given a certain (rather hilly stretch), I can on average cut 5 minutes off my time between a geared 30 lb bike and a fixed gear, 27 lb UO8.

Once I get one of the VO bottom brackets, some modern flip-flop 700c wheels and better bars, I plan on setting it up as a 48X19 and seeing what it'll do then. I've the feeling that it'll go from one of my favorite bikes to being even better than that!
