I think I'm gonna be sick!

While riding this morning, I saw a Masi Gran Criterium...turned into a fixie. I don't know if I should cry or puke. Isn't there some kind of a law? I mean if you deface a Picasso, you're going to jail. Right?

I don't think it's really that bad. I wouldn't call the frame defaced over the fact that it does not have gears. As far as we know it may have been from ebay bought as a bare frame set? It's probably not what I would do with it but it must meet the needs and wants of it's owner. Now if you would say that it had been cut up... !

Anyway.... it can't be as bad as this monstrosity that someone on my local craigslist cobbled together:

https://akroncanton.craigslist.org/bik/1711957572.html

Yes.... that is 3 bikes that have been welded together

to tell the truth, I don't mind a fixed gear conversion, as long as the original parts are saved and nothing is cut off the bike. As long as it can be reverted to stock use, what's the problem?

The way I see it, if the original parts get sold that gives me or someone else the opportunity to "restore" an old frame. I get queezy thinking that maybe something just got chucked out but how would you ever know?

I got my Raleigh Pro as a frame and fork only, and I was initially faced with a decision of how to build it. It can be fun to get creative with builds, I think Sheldon Brown's Raleigh Competition is a good example of that.

Heck,..........just feel real good when you slam-drop those hacksaw weilding, SS/fixie, cyclo fashion trendy "hipsters" on your future big hillclimbs!! You can tell him that he's very visible from the top of the hill, thanks to the day-glo colors on his rims and bar tape!!
He'll be wishing for those gears back then!

As long as you own the Picasso, no one is going to jail.

Seriously, that Masi looks good.

I don't see how conversions like this are any worse than something you might see in the Retro Roadies thread.

Really.

I've got some friends that would change your opinion.

Heck, my fourteen year old would give people fits with his level of conditioning.

I rode with a group last year that did the MS 150 rockin' SS/FG with racks and panniers.

I don't recall anyone passing us.

and both the Fuji and the Masi look like great rides.

Well that Fuji and Masi were not shaved, hacked, "drewed" and dayglowed, so they retain their classic beauty......kudos to the owners of those bikes because the bikes are not "castrated" permanently!
All I can say is, with the same conditioning and experience, the rider with the gears, proper, non-cutdown bars and bottles will always win the big climbs! Now you can't argue with that!

I can argue with that. 40X13 gets me up hills faster than the roadies I ride with. I also find that, given a certain (rather hilly stretch), I can on average cut 5 minutes off my time between a geared 30 lb bike and a fixed gear, 27 lb UO8.

Once I get one of the VO bottom brackets, some modern flip-flop 700c wheels and better bars, I plan on setting it up as a 48X19 and seeing what it'll do then. I've the feeling that it'll go from one of my favorite bikes to being even better than that!

That Masi looks pretty classy, a guy around me has a masi and he very hastily spray painted his fork orange to match the deep v's and the little bit of orange on the decals. Youll really cry if I manage to get a pic of that...

Really, it's these silly, entirely predictable "cartoonish" blasts at guys that rock ss/fg.

That's what bores me to tears.

It doesn't add to the C&V experience here, as more than a couple of us like to ride ss/fg.

....and let's not get into "big climbs" please.

I've ridden more than my fair share.

I'll say it again though, I've toured with guys on Quickbeams that would eat many "racer" types alive.

I've seen 'em do it.

This is the C&V forum, and I think a good number of us have reasons to feel bad when beautiful and hard to find and afford classic bike frames are irreversably messed up. so I do not see it as useless and/or boring points to bring out when we see such things. Now if I post the same frustrations in the SS/Fixie forums,...........then I'd be a very looney man! I know we can't stop it from happening, but you can't also avoid us from feeling bad about it happening so many times to so many nice bikes that I would just love to restore/build up as a C&V project.
Yes, I believe your young cousins or friends that ride fixies might beat a geared rider because of their unusual talent and stregnth (I do have a 20 year old nephew that eats 13T rear gears regularly with his unusually strong gear mashing), but the same rider on the different bikes, ......the geared bike will always work better on a course with real hills on it......and when was the last ime we never encountered any elevation changes in our rides.....

But none of the ones pictured are irreversibly changed! You could take either one and with a groupset, make it exactly as it rolled out of the factory.

Please read my post closely and you'll see and I did address this. It's the "cut up and "shaved" bikes that bothers me.
