I just had the same problem. I was going to look online, but found that a 48/49 in the Euro sizes can range anywhere from a 12 to 16. It all depends on the manufacturer. I went to a shop in my area and wound up getting a pair of Specialized road shoes for $89 in size 48, which came out to a 14.5 in US sizes. This was my first pair of cycling shoes and now I'm just waiting for my pedals to come in the mail. I saved $40 over what the shop wanted for them so I got them online, but I would recommend you try on the shoes in a shop.
