Right -- I mean, people here talk about riding an easy 20-miler, yet there are drivers who daily drive a commute that's a mere 5 miles or less.

I think you're going at it backwards. Use shoes that work for your purpose, then get pedals & cleats that work with the shoes.
Either way, you can use one pair of shoes across multiple bikes by getting more pairs of compatible pedals. Or, you can get a pedal system that works with multiple shoes, then you can use different shoes across different bikes without taking things apart every time.
It's not nearly as difficult as you seem to think it is. Either that, or you're so broke that you should be worrying more about food and rent than you were about buying that second bike.
