As you can tell by the responses, there is more than one way to solve this problem.
Keep in mind that a Brooks saddle will require "a few hundred miles" (by some accounts) to break in. Other saddles do not have such a long break-in period.
MTB shorts are padded. You can also buy a pad for your saddle.
Maybe you are sitting on the wrong part of the saddle. Try sliding back and sitting on your "sit bones" and see how that feels. If that's better, then move your saddle forward so that it's now under the sit bones and you aren't riding on your perineum.
