I tried the liners once and didnt like them as much as my lycras... they are pretty much all I wear... There is something to be said for the expensive ones too. Seldom will I concede that a more expensive name brand item is truly better...

I just ordered some lyrca. I got two pairs of HIND cycling shorts with Chamois (8 panel), for $25. I haven't tried it before so I figured this would be an inexpensive way to try some. Unfortunately I know nothing about HIND, anyone know anything about this brand?

$25 for both or $25 each? Either way, I've never heard of that brand, and generally speaking I wouldn't expect a lot at that price range. Still, it might work for you, 8 panels is a good thing but there's no telling what that fabric and especially the chamois is going to look/feel like. Report back after you've ridden them.

I do about 10mi daily commuting around town and school, plus 20mi+ rides twice a week or more and my taint is getting pretty damn tired. I wear jeans usually and ride on a cervelo road style seat. I'd like to find something to wear under my jeans as the large majority of my biking is to or from places I'd prefer not to be just wearing bike shorts. I assume liners are the way to go, but I've never used either so I figured I'd ask here.
Keep in mind that a Brooks saddle will require "a few hundred miles" (by some accounts) to break in. Other saddles do not have such a long break-in period.
MTB shorts are padded. You can also buy a pad for your saddle.
Maybe you are sitting on the wrong part of the saddle. Try sliding back and sitting on your "sit bones" and see how that feels. If that's better, then move your saddle forward so that it's now under the sit bones and you aren't riding on your perineum.

I got them off of ebay, new with tags, and it was $25 for 2 pairs, not $25 each. I don't doubt that they won't last forever, but I figured it would be a cheap starting point and would let me figure out if I want to invest in better stuff in the future.

Also, looks like the same seller has some more up. He let me know when he would be shipping them and gave me a confirmation #. Because of damned ebay, they were shipped to my home address and not my school address, so I'll have to wait until next week to try them out.

i just wear boxer briefs under normal, everyday clothes. zero chafe, and my taint is A-ok.
a decent saddle makes a difference.
Maybe he just started riding to get in shape.
Instead of feeling bad, be happy that he's at least trying to do something about it.

circa 1994-95 I happened into a store where they were having a huge sale on cycling clothing and I bought a ton of stuff, including something I'd never seen before: Descente padded cycling underwear for 5 bucks a pair. What a revelation! From that point forward I've never ridden any considerable distance without padded cycling underwear (called liners now I guess? At least my Novarra ones come in boxes that call them that) AND padded cycling shorts. I also own Brooks Saddles and a Fizik Arione Saddle(both great), but neither of them see my butt for very long without padded cycling shorts or bibs AND padded underwear. The one who really loses out on this deal is my wife, who launders all the shorts/undershorts I go through in a week.
Cold and cool weather tip: Patagonia or equivalent tights/base layers in between the underwear and the shorts. Works great

I use full grade bike shorts, usually Aerotech Designs "top-shelf" shorts under normal jeans or jean shorts. When I get on lunch break for my ride I just ditch the outers and enjoy the lycra. My job is up and down on the floor and power walking all day long so the compression and sweat wicking actually helps.
