i hit a dog well enough when it was so dark i couldn't see the dog but just aimed at the barking and snapping. ( i had a little fair warning, long story)

practice taking it out and spraying it is my advice, i keep some pepper spray pumpstrapped near my water bottles or at top of the seatstays. easy to get to.
