There are two types of "skate-style" helmets. One is a plastic shell with padding, but no styrofoam type material. These are no good for biking- precisely for the reason that you mention. The other type has the same matherial as in other bike helmets. With more coverage, fewer vents, and a smooth shell (helps prevent the kind of torque-induced injury that people worry about with bike helmets), these are excellent for anything but the hot times of year.
