Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

We're going to still need to head to the Water Tower as the Brooks is at work, safe and sound.

one more "heck yeah" to marcus' wheel building abilities. I've had my rear wheel for
almost 2 years now I think and i've never had to take it in. and trust me I do zero wheel maintenence. i still get confused when people say "cone wrench" sounds dirty.

Bikes: https://www.jacobsbicycles.com

i have a brand new neon pink selle concor comfort saddle that would make this bike about 10% better.

if thats something you'd be into, i'll let it go for shipping as it is doing absolutely nothing, and i have no hopes of getting a pink bike!

They get one saddle per hide from what I've heard...

Glad to see you riding again. And helmets are good. I go with whoever reccomended the BMX style - I feel a lot better wearing one of those. Haven't had to use it yet, but it's good to know that it's there.

Out of curiousity, how much did you raise towards the medical bills through the paypal drive? I wish I could have sent you more, but I'm kind of broke these days.

And I'm not sending you any more. You have better hubs than I do. Though pink wouldn't work at all on any of my rides...

I guess bmx helmets have their place but their not meant to take high speed impact. b,x guys fall when theyre goin relatively slow compared to fixies/roadies. ive heard stories of pepole who got concussions because the bmx helmet offered little protection from a 30+ mph impact. so... im stickin with my road helmet. the styrofoamesque material that protrudes does a good job protecting my head, ive smashed 2 helmets without injury. my opinion at least

Bike helmets in general aren't spec'd to 30mph. Your roadie lid is designed for a 20kph/14mph impact, nobody tests their efficacy at higher speeds.

Skate or BMX helmets are probably as good a bet as anything because in those sports it's understood that banging yer noggin is part of the deal, not an exceptional event and are designed for more gonzo action.

There are two types of "skate-style" helmets. One is a plastic shell with padding, but no styrofoam type material. These are no good for biking- precisely for the reason that you mention. The other type has the same matherial as in other bike helmets. With more coverage, fewer vents, and a smooth shell (helps prevent the kind of torque-induced injury that people worry about with bike helmets), these are excellent for anything but the hot times of year.

Incidentally; Sophia means wisdom in Greek. Make your riding live up to the name.

Pretty as the actress too.
