My experience with situations like this is that it almost never develops in such a way that I would be involved in any accident. I really would rather not have to watch any carnage though. If I see oncoming traffic that they probably can't, I'll try to keep them from passing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't

I wave at everyone that honks, makes me feel better about it for some reason. In any event, the OP did the right thing, don't let this kind of thing bother you. Sure you could get off your bike and wait, but you'd never get anywhere that way. The very notion is ridiculous.
