I failed to dematerialize!

Was going up toward a NJ Turnpike overpass where there is not enough shoulder for a car to park without being over the white shoulder line. On the approach was a house that had a yard sale going on. 3 cars were parked in front, only one of which pulled up on the grass far enought to even clear the shoulder indicator line. So I was forced to ride near the middle of the lane to pass these cars. Meanwhile, Mr Emptyskull traveling in the lane behind me, decides to swing around me at 60+ while laying on his horn the entire time. Fargin' bostich that I am, I failed to use my Acme Cronosynclastic Dematerializer and disappear from his path. Since he was going up a very steep rise, there was no way for him to avoid any vehicle that suddenly crested the hill from the opposite direction. Is there ANY remedy when this happens, short of waiting for the yard-sale people to leave? Since there is a curve behind me it is impossible to be sure that I could pass all the vehicles before being overtaken by yet another car driven by someone with a cabbage for a head.

I think that they call it "taking the lane"

If you take the lane, then they either have to run over you, or, wait and go around you in the other lane.

It's been pointed out to me that I COULD have dismounted, gone up in the yard and remounted when I passed the cars. F___ THAT!

These types of situations are all too common. Sometimes I make it to the middle of the lane and make the cars wait. Sometimes I get a swig of water and let the cars pass before continuing on.

Ask Q to outfit your bike w/ a machine gun, land mines, and a smokescreen... because you only live twice!

Does this mean there's another fredgarvin7 on the Enterprise?

You were going around an obstruction in the road. Most FRAP laws I've seen even have exceptions listed for things like that. You did nothing wrong. Sounds like you did exactly what I would have done, which is move into the lane, and keep going. The guy in the car was an idiot. Accept it, and move on.

I believe the OP did take the lane, and the person went around him in the other lane without waiting on a blind hill.

I think in this situation the only thing to do is hope that the next time the driver does a similar maneuver is that there is a garbage truck parked in the opposite lane just over the crest (with the worker safely off the road rolling the newly emptied can.)

Some simple caltrops would suffice, though they don't tend to attract women the same way.

I reread the OP and you are right, he did take the lane.
I had interpreted what I had read, as he felt that he had been passed too closely, now I fail to understand what his issue is/was.
If a car passed me on a blind hill in the other lane, it would fall into the category of "not my problem"

Yeah, you did right. The idiot would have (or should have) gotten a failure-to-keep-right ticket, if it was a marked no-passing zone, or if it was unmarked, but unsafe to pass.

If that car meets oncoming traffic and swings back to the right before completing the pass, it can become your problem in a heck of a hurry.

Generally in that situation... I brake.

The last thing I want is to get involved in a car on car collision.

Just be happy that the driver was watching what was in the road and used his horn to show that he had seen you. Since he was going so much faster than you, he would have been able to pull back into the lane in front of you if there had been traffic in the opposite direction.

My experience with situations like this is that it almost never develops in such a way that I would be involved in any accident. I really would rather not have to watch any carnage though. If I see oncoming traffic that they probably can't, I'll try to keep them from passing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't

I wave at everyone that honks, makes me feel better about it for some reason. In any event, the OP did the right thing, don't let this kind of thing bother you. Sure you could get off your bike and wait, but you'd never get anywhere that way. The very notion is ridiculous.

If the situation is such that I can avoid being in someone's way by slowing a little, I will. But that's not the way I read the OP.

Assuming of course, that the OTHER driver didn't try to avoid him and jump to the other lane. The horn was NOT to let me know he had seen, it was looooonnngg and continued AFTER he passed me. It was pure rage that motivated him. How DARE I exist????

It doesn't get me outta their way. But once I can tell they're being a moron and passing, a tap on the brakes or stopping to coast a bit means the dangerous pass is done faster. This reduces the chance that the driver is in a head on collision... and a head on collision is extremely damaging. The large velocity differences mean that I don't want to be anywhere NEAR there.

And yes, they're large. A head on collision on a 25mph road ends up being a 50mph velocity difference. At 35mph, we're talking 70mph. That assumes no one is speeding... around here, it's common to see 35mph on quiet residential streets, and 55mph on streets posted at 30 or 35. The math gets very ugly, very quickly.

The knetic energy increases with square of speed so two cars hitting head on at 25 mph have half the energy of a car going at 50 mph

You did everything right. Don't bother worrying about these guys once they're past you. They're unhappy people, and make themselves more miserable than you every could.

Exactly! But the OP did the right thing. By taking the lane, you also leave enough room to veer right when you see a car suddenly coming around the bend, because you know Mr. Impatient is not going to take a head-on collision for your sake.

Nearly every ride home I get passed on a blind curve going over a small bridge - so it is blind both from the curve and the hump of the bridge. As Mr. Impatient is zooming by me I've got my eye on the oncoming lane, and am ready to hit the brakes and swerve for the guardrail if I see car come over the top of the bridge towards us. 'Cause I'm pretty sure that kind of driver is not going to take a head-on collision just for me.
