Riding 50 miles in blue jeans with a thick seam located right on your perineum is not a good idea. Fighting wind in water-absorbing, floppy cotton Tshirts isn't a good idea either.
Exactly. I naively did a 75 mile ride (the Harlem Valley Rail Ride) on a singlespeed with cotton shorts, cotton t-shirt, cotton Vans slip-ons, and platform pedals. It was ****ing grueling, mainly because it was hot, had a substantial amount of climbs, and all the cotton I was wearing nixed any chance of breathability & wicking--there's a reason cotton is often referred to as 'death cloth'. Since then, I've acquired some decent shorts and a lightweight jersey and have never looked back...should help out next month for a 2 day, ~200 mile ride from Baltimore to NYC by way of Philadelphia (using my road bike this time instead of the singlespeed).
