I only have experience with SPDs and Eggbeaters. Of the two, I much prefer the Eggs. They clip out MUCH more easily and are quieter. I also think the design overall is more elegant and simple, which I like. I was tempted to try something from Speedplay since they seem to get rave reviews from most users but found a great deal on the Eggbeaters.
As for shoes, I can only say get a pair with velcro straps as opposed to laces. Nothing to tuck away, more comfortable, quicker on and off.
