although i dont always practice what i preach. if im stopping into the deli to pick up a sando, just the U-lock. if im leaving my bike for longer than 15 minutes, then i definitely use both locks. friends give me sh!!t for it but they can wait an extra minute, the beer isnt going to run out at the bar dude.
15+ minutes is enough time for the thief to not only compromise both, even three locks, but get a good 14 minute head start to ride it away, if it isn't thrown into the back of a van or truck and driven away ?

Personally, I suggest going to bars that have a patio and serve outside, lock your bike up in plain view, work in teams with your drinking buddies, one guy buys a round, others watch and alternate. In this instance, the bike owners were fortunate the bouncers witnessed it and did something about it. Often times, what goes on out on the sidewalk isn't bar business and they aren't obligated to do anything about it, they are security for the bar and it's why when the court date comes around that you cyclists get the bouncer's back on this one and be there to support more than just getting your bikes back. Without their testimony, the bouncer assaulted and battered the thieves. So go the extra step and make sure the charges stick and lock the thieves up.
