You're fooling yourself if you think locking it up unattended and outside your immediate view is safe. Search You Tube for tutorials if you don't believe me ? The other day I locked my bike over in front of a store, was in there a few minutes and the bike was out of sight, after watching a few videos and knowing what I do from those videos, it was a welcome relief to come out of the store and find it was still locked to the parking meter, and that was just a few minutes that it was locked, unattended and out of view.

A bike lock deters an otherwise honest citizen from becoming a bike thief. Habitual, repeat offender bike thieves won't care what type, brand, model or how much you spent on the lock, they'll have it picked about as fast, if not faster than some bike owners with the actual key for the lock.
right, repeat thieves usually pick locks.

Ya, I know a U lock would be better, it happened in the middle of the day with people everywhere, anyways found this site because now I'm looking for a new bike, that bike was made in Italy conversion I did 5 years ago, now it's hard to find a bike to convert, for $600 or less do you have any suggestions? I've looked at a few, from a Fuji Track Comp to a Specialized Langster (made in Taiwan), Tommasso (no thanks, made in China and seemed cheap) also IRO, Kilo stripper, etc, what's good?

You're asking for a multi-page response in a thread that doesn't even have to do with this. Spend some time using the search bar or Google. Please.

i bought my stripper recently as a replacement for a bike theft and i have to say it's a really solid bike out of the box, i put on my favorite handlebars and some pedals from spare parts bin and it really rides well, very good deal in a bike, and impressively light for the price

No need to get pissed off when you fail to do the simplest task of searching.

Especially giving irrelevant information to a thread that no one replied for a month or so.

I initially read that as a sarcastic "good for you," but then I realized that it could also mean "go f--k yourself." Love it when people give attitude when we suggest that they do something that involves exerting actual effort.

oh easy banana's for jesus, it did mean good for you, as a sarcastic response to your "You're asking for a multi-page response in a thread that doesn't even have to do with this. I did a post/thread asking for advice on a bike and via my reply to this post soyboy helped by giving his advice while you are actually part of the problem going so off topic to correct me, give it a rest, I don't really care, just looking for a little help and I got some, as for the original topic I think we all agree bike thieves suck! now don't go getting all crazy on me please, I'm new, I'll try and keep it together as best I can.

You're supposed to stay more or less on topic in a thread. Your question wasn't even tangential. It was skew.

Bikes: '74 Schwinn Sports Tourer (Polo), S-Works E5 Team Festina (Chorus 11), Trek 2200 Bonded Carbon (Fixed), Trek 920 (7 speed IGH), Chesini Olimpiade SL (1x7)

And now we're talking about geometry, which is even more unrelated to the topic.

Thanks a lot SS66.

I use the Fahgettaboudit, which is a mini u-lock. Kryponite ranks it as its "most secure" lock, which is one ranking about the regular NY lock (standard and long sizes).

I don't think the difference between the two is enough to warrant buying a new lock though. Mini u-locks tend to be preferable in general because there's less room for leverage based attacks.

I just had a bike stolen...**** sucks, but your story really brightened my night. Kryptonites are awesome, I wish I had the money to drop on one. I think a pretty foolproof way is a U-Lock through the frame and front wheel, then a cable lock through the back wheel, frame and U-Lock. Probably overkill but I'd rather look like a dweeb than have another bike stolen.

I do this plus a cable for the front wheel and saddle.
