Bolt cutters should be illegal to carry on your person. Even with a U-lock a sawza can be used, of course I imagine that would be a loud method, so wait for a heavy down pour. That should muffle the sound.... uh I mean NO stealing is bad! LOL

The person who in this case almost had an item stolen is not at fault. That honor belongs to the person who decided to be low brow garbage. Clearly, the lesson of using a more powerful lock has been learned but as garbage proves everyday in places like NYC this only keeps honest people and the common opportunists at bay. The core problem is lack of morals and lack of um, let's call it immediate reinforcement of the benefits of moral behavior on those who have proven they need a refresher lesson.

Outstanding. I actually wish they had been roughed up more physically before the police arrived. I'm not a violent man but..... {SNIP] go to a printing shop with their pictures and have a few hundred copies...[SNIP] made with their faces and a quick explanation and stick them under car windshield wipers at the mall...[SNIP]
And guess what? You have NO control over what is going to happen to your bike or anything else if it is let out of your sight.
Dont let your possessions own you / love the ride, not the bike / blah blah blah... peace out!

The entire situation is/and was unfortunate. But in the end. We still have our bikes.
No more garbage locks.
It's a good thing at least it was my affinity lo pro, which is still not a cheap bike, but I get my toyo Godzilla in this Thursday. If it was that...then this would have been a super bloody mess. Anyone who touches my Godzilla will be in a world of hurt.
Mmmm....toyo Godzilla.....ahhh....ehhh...gurrrrgle...

im a strong proponent of a cable lock used in conjunction with a U-lock.
although i dont always practice what i preach. if im stopping into the deli to pick up a sando, just the U-lock. if im leaving my bike for longer than 15 minutes, then i definitely use both locks. friends give me sh!!t for it but they can wait an extra minute, the beer isnt going to run out at the bar dude.

Its funny you say that. In the state of texas its technically against the law to carry wire cutters if its not a part of your job...(old law that was passed over 100 years ago to fight native americans and thieves who tried to cut barbed wire during the early periods of "taming" the west....) but its not against the law to carry bolt cutters?!
Its nuts.

you can cut that masterlock with a pair of nice pliers haha. Yeah, in brooklyn you might as well not lock it up if you are using one of those wire locks.

Yes. Drinking and riding is technically against the law, but technicalities is how I make my living....
The police in our area are way too busy busting drunk drivers than to have to deal with us Morons.. In fact. One of us got really hurt a few weeks ago. Riding our usual ride, and he decided to take an unusual line, and he nailed a parking curb at about 25mph. It was a nasty fall. One entire side blood and road rash.
Good thing he was inebriated because he didn't feel a thing until the next morning. Good thing hes a doctor.
He cleaned himself up well the next day. For a doctor he's nice as can be but not to bright when he drinks.
So. In all. Yes, we don't hurt anyone but ourselves.
But from Now on we are using a brinks truck to lock up our rigs...

I am also against violence, I agree that thieves are *******s who need to do something better than to steal stuff, but I find the violence unnecessary. Beating them up is not going to do any good nor it will teach them a lesson. They'll still do it and they are probably used to being beaten up and kicked around. Kicking their ass only feeds your ego, so you can tell your friends how you kicked a thief's ass, good for you. Frankly, I'm not buying it.

Yeap. Violence is BS.
But the argument rises.
A person who steals, In this case someones rig, can they understand legal justice or is the only type of justice they will understand is a good old ass kicking?
But
Is stooping down to their level of ignorance helping society?
Regardless of the situation, it's unfortunetly impossible to stop people
from stealing. Even with legal justice or physical violence.
But still. I felt bad for that guy. He was getting his ass kicked.

With all the theivery I have been hearing about lately, I'm almost considering investing in a U-lock to go with my cable lock. I just try to bring my bike in everywhere I go, because I am paranoid about my baby being stolen.

Kryptonite bike lock fans are too funny. Take your pick on how easy it is to pick your $ 65-100 lock, whether it's a key, a combination or the old style key that you can pick with a bic pen. To me you're just out $ 65-100 more on top of your expensive bike. The real thieves will have your kryptonite lock picked in 20 seconds or less. You're fooling yourself if you think locking it up unattended and outside your immediate view is safe. Search You Tube for tutorials if you don't believe me ? The other day I locked my bike over in front of a store, was in there a few minutes and the bike was out of sight, after watching a few videos and knowing what I do from those videos, it was a welcome relief to come out of the store and find it was still locked to the parking meter, and that was just a few minutes that it was locked, unattended and out of view.
A bike lock deters an otherwise honest citizen from becoming a bike thief. Habitual, repeat offender bike thieves won't care what type, brand, model or how much you spent on the lock, they'll have it picked about as fast, if not faster than some bike owners with the actual key for the lock.

Personally, I suggest going to bars that have a patio and serve outside, lock your bike up in plain view, work in teams with your drinking buddies, one guy buys a round, others watch and alternate. In this instance, the bike owners were fortunate the bouncers witnessed it and did something about it. Often times, what goes on out on the sidewalk isn't bar business and they aren't obligated to do anything about it, they are security for the bar and it's why when the court date comes around that you cyclists get the bouncer's back on this one and be there to support more than just getting your bikes back. Without their testimony, the bouncer assaulted and battered the thieves. So go the extra step and make sure the charges stick and lock the thieves up.

Bent Life,
Correct for you. jakerock attributed circumstances and feelings I do not allow in such circumstances. It's a straight business proposition. I would neither enjoy nor dislike the process. I would calculate what I considered to be an appropriate response to the issue at hand and conduct myself accordingly. In the case of someone stealing my bike - well, if I caught them in the act there would be a fight. I would hope to "win" but that would not really be the goal. I would actively attempt to make sure the individual was reminded of the error in judgment made every time they looked in the mirror for the balance of their lives. It doesn't really take much to create a permanent scar on someones face. I would also do everything in my power to cost the person their job if they had one. I would lastly attempt to alert everyone in a reasonable distance of the person and their proclivity for theft. During all of this I would live a full and complete life without any loss of serenity. Vengeance creates loss of serenity. The simple act of correcting a situation and doing what can be done to try and make sure it does not happen again carries no such penalty.

I effin hate bike thieves! I have had 3 bikes stolen in one year, 2 were ****ty beach cruisers, locked with a thin cable, they were taken while I was surfing. About 5 years ago I made a fixie/single speed conversion, anyways that got stolen too, at 5pm in downtown Huntington Beach, it was locked with a thick cable, it was a 62cm, that's how I found this forum, because now I need to buy a new one and it's not as easy to find a cool old road bike on cl and convert anymore....still pissed, ps if anyone has any suggestions on a good bike lemme know, currently looking at a speacialized langster, built how I like for 600, also an IRO, the thing I liked about the conversion is the bike was made in italy, I really don't want a bike made in china but I guess china or taiwan are my only choices, if anyone can reccomend a good one for about 600 (or hopefully less) I'd appreciate it
