The pump has a gauge. I can see that Im putting 150psi into the fork, but I cannot unscrew the pump fast enough to avoid losing all the air I just put in. Any solutions?
OK, sounds like the pump works. I don't mean to ask a dumb question, but what's going on with the shock to make you think it's not holding air? Sag not changing, shock remaining soft, etc.?

If your shock pump is functioning properly, the pressure you hear escaping is from the hose, which is pressurized along with the fork.
I get a quick 'psst' from my pump when I unscrew it too.
