Shock pump woes

Hey all,

I have a Manitou Minute 29 80mm fork. I was trying to reduce some of the sag; my pump will put air in the fork, but when I try to unscrew the pump, it lets all the air out . Is my pump shot, or is this a bigger problem with my fork?

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a way to confirm that the pump is producing pressure? If it doesn't have a gauge built in, perhaps you could test it by trying to pump up a tire (not too much!) or screwing it into a high pressure truck tire gauge (100+ pounds) to see what it's putting out. If the shock isn't holding air at all, the air valve on it needs to be replaced or an internal seal is gone.

The pump has a gauge. I can see that Im putting 150psi into the fork, but I cannot unscrew the pump fast enough to avoid losing all the air I just put in. Any solutions?

If your shock pump is functioning properly, the pressure you hear escaping is from the hose, which is pressurized along with the fork. As you're unthreading the fitting, the schrader valve closes before the seal on the fitting is broken. Then when you thread the pump back on, the hose refills with air from the fork and since it's such a small volume in the fork, the pressure reads lower. So just pump it up to where you want it, remove the pump, and walk away.

OK, sounds like the pump works. I don't mean to ask a dumb question, but what's going on with the shock to make you think it's not holding air? Sag not changing, shock remaining soft, etc.?

If your shock pump is functioning properly, the pressure you hear escaping is from the hose, which is pressurized along with the fork.
I get a quick 'psst' from my pump when I unscrew it too.

I too get the quick psst from my pump when unthreading. Maybe you should see if a friend has one and try it to see if it is your pump.
