IMO the shape of the new hoods is worth it, or at least is a non-cosmetic incentive
the line from shimano is that they changed the amount of brake cable the levers pull, so while using older calipers with new levers will still slow your bike the feel will be "hard." Tested both configs and more or less agreed.
