I have a 7-speed set. I originally ran the front/friction lever for the rear, and the 7-speed indexing lever for the front, which worked better than it might sound as a coarse ratchet shifter (worked perfectly, in fact). Currently I'm running the Command ratchet shifter for the FD, and a modified Shimano rapid fire trigger shifter for the rear.
