Being a collegiate cyclist I have seen many set ups from 3 bikes on top of a 944, to three people and 3 bikes in a hatchback 2 door honda civic. Trunk racks work fine as long as you have a really good one, the Bones racks are the best in my experience. I've also seen 2 61cm bikes put in the trunk of a VW Jetta along with pretty much all the gear to go with them, so a little bit of creative packing can go a long way, but I'd say if its only you, buy a hybrid and enjoy the good gas milage and the extra space.
