84 VW Westphalia, If I'm going by myself I just throw the bike in the back I also have a decent rear rack if I travel with a teammate.
Pro's: great for getting ready and then cleaning up when the weathers pissy, I always have a cold beer in the fridge, cheap to run.
con's: I can run faster....

I own a VW Jetta Wagon. bike fits in the back with the seat down. but I ususally ride around with the roof rack. We only have the one car, but if we were to get another one I would be looking at the Honda Element. Kinda ugly on the outside but very utilitarian which is nice.
I figure if my bike can handle my 240lbs on it then it can handle the roof rack.
[edit] the Jetta is a diesel so I end up getting 50mpg off of biodiesel. so I don't feel bad driving along ways to a startline. [/edit]

Being a collegiate cyclist I have seen many set ups from 3 bikes on top of a 944, to three people and 3 bikes in a hatchback 2 door honda civic. Trunk racks work fine as long as you have a really good one, the Bones racks are the best in my experience. I've also seen 2 61cm bikes put in the trunk of a VW Jetta along with pretty much all the gear to go with them, so a little bit of creative packing can go a long way, but I'd say if its only you, buy a hybrid and enjoy the good gas milage and the extra space.

I have a Lexus RX300 w/standard roof rack; Yakima makes a bike carrier called the 'Raptor' that fits my rack w/their 'Mighty Mounts' (hate their names!). Yakima gear can be adapted to almost any factory-original rack with various parts and pieces. I bring my bike to work 2-3 times a week on top of my car - it's functional and simple - NOT inexpensive, though.

Nice ride, Mike! Same color as my Jeep... (Liberty...not great gas mileage, but enough room in the back to easily stow my bike without messing with racks)
Have fun,

I know a guy who drove into the garage with two bikes on a roof rack and peeled the roof right off his old Honda sedan ! That was the SECOND TIME...

Really it's always just a fear but should not be anymore likely to happen.
I had my wife's bike and my MTB on a rear rack heading to Seattle, about halfway stopped to rest and check the bikes. The front tire of mine was hanging in front of the exhaust and melted my tire oops.
