Sounds like your buyer freaked out, over-reacted, and then someone with some knowledge about bikes probably talked them off the ledge.
Something along this line happens to all of us at one time or another. She's probably not a flake, and she's certainly not a bike person, but she's probably now super happy with her super hip vintage 3 speed.
I'd laugh and let it go.
What is it with three speeds anyhoo? They used to completely unwanted. My GF and I have matching Raleighs, and lately I've been getting questions about them-- like, "Can you find me one of those?" Pretty soon, everyone will want vintage MTBs...
