If you're seriously looking for a bike to ride and not show off on, then in addition to the BD bikes take a look at NeuvationCycling.com. I'm in the same boat as you are and I've been researching the two for the past month and after sifting through the extremists on these forums I'm convinced that neither option will be catastrophic. While I can wrench a bike with no issues I've already worked it out with my LBS to maintain my bike once I get it. He's more than happy to do it since he knows that I will buy all my gear and upgrades through him.
