^Funny, I was never a tinkerer at all before becoming an avid road cyclist a few years back. I grew up playing lots of sports, but didn't do much with my hands.
Working on bicycles has really brought out the inner engineer in me - my father is a mechanical engineer. Fun to work with him. I'll be reading the instructors and he'll say, "Give it to..." He just has to look at it for a minute and he can figure it out.
I really think working on bicycles has improved my overall ability to understand mechanical objects of all types. And, it has definitely given me an appreciation for tinkering, handy work, understanding how things work, and fixing something yourself.
Now I need to go get on that annoying rear wheel leak...
