I need to transport my laptop nearly every day. I tried panniers, but for the laptop I ended-up with an inexpensive SIMS messenger bag I found on close-out at either Dick's or Sports Authority. This allowed me to keep the Topeak MTB trunk with retractable side panniers for the rest of the cargo duties (tools, spare tube, lock, lights, lunch, work clothes, etc.). I like the load placement better with this set-up plus the laptop doesn't seem to get jostled as much.
I currently carry my laptop just fine in a cheap(ish) Avenir pannier. It works, but the pannier is larger than it needs to be, and it's not red. When I commute on my LHT, I don't really care.
My single-speed is my "light" bike. I just added a rear rack, and was hoping for a smallish red pannier to carry the laptop. Red is necessary to match the cranks, chain, bottle cage, and bar tape.
I don't like backpacks or messenger bags.
I may have to just use the panniers I have for now, unless I can find a custom made thing.
