Bikes: Mostly road bikes, all steel and mostly vintage, w/ one mountain rigid

Ergo 10 compatibility with vintage double/triple cranks/chainrings?

I'm building up a new rando bike, 130 mm spacing rear with a compact double of 30x46 and a Campag ergo 10 cassette by IRD of 11-30 w/ alloy derailleurs/brifters. The VO grand cru cyclotourist style crankset would work but is described as 5-9 speed compatible only. Can someone explain why it would not work with a ten speed chain? An old TA crank w/ TA rings from the bins would be similar I'd expect. I want good shifting with a modern compact set up, but do want gears almost as low as my touring set up, or 28-32, and all alloy.

Regards,

Dan
