I just keep my droid in my back pocket of my jersey zipped and it works just fine. Most of the rides I do I can just put it in a pocket with elastic only. I used to put it in my gear bag and it worked fine there too but it was a pain to get in and out.

I believe part of what makes it better is the firmware for the android application it self. When I send an e-mail to my phone I get it in 5 min at the very most. This is on the original Android. I seem to remember it taking longer before.
