can be looser, and it's not as critical that a precise tension be achieved. Basically, as long as the chain isn't running tight at any point and isn't flopping around wildly, it's ok. I just set up all my bikes, both FG and SS, pretty much the same with about 1/2 total up/down slack at the tightest point.
