There's also the issue of being prepared too. Running out of bread is pretty common. But if you have some flour stockpiled, bread is never too far off. Sometimes it's easier to whip up a quick loaf rather than making a trip through rough weather.
But this goes for any mode of transportation. Going out to start up a car in sub zero weather is no treat either.

I seldom buy bread, homemade is much, much better.
We always have a back supply of food. If all the grocery stores in the world were to shut down tomorrow we would still be eating for the next month on the stuff we have stashed. Probably would get pretty monotonous towards the end, but at least we would be eating.
