I'm thinking that Surly should do away with that spare spoke holder. I'd much rather have a rear chainstay mounted kickstand than a freakin spare spoke holder. I can put a spare spoke or two anywhere.
True. I've read where a few LHT owners ground off the spare spoke holder and mounted a side Kickstand. On the LHTs sporting 26" wheels, I'm thinking the spokes are not too prone to breaking. But then again it is nice to have the spares, I'm sometimes prone to forgetting to purchase some spare parts before my trips...the spare spokes already provided save me the worry.
