Play in the bearings doesn't necessarily mean they're bad. Might just need adjusting. IMO, Mavic hubs are among the finest ever made, and I have 3 sets of wheels built with 571/2 hubs that you'd have to pry from my cold, dead hands.

Adjusting bearing "run out" just takes a single cone wrench, and it's easier to do when the wheel is in the frame.
