Mavic 500 wheels

So today i bought a Bertin , I have a post about it " https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...rtin-Vitus-999 " and it came with a vintage ( 1980s-1990s?) Mavic wheelset. I have been researching online about them as the back wheel appears to have a little play in it. I've ordered new bearings , 6001 2rs. The info i have been seeing online seems to suggest they are a very good wheelset. Does anybody know anything about these wheels?
Thanks

Bikes: many

The hubs and rims will have different nomenclature.
Mavic 500 series hubs on their own are very good hubs. I have three sets.
The rims (if mavic) will have their own decal designating model, if not we can figure it out by size and color and weight.

Edit: if there is play in the hub it just needs to be adjusted. The bearings in these hubs rarely have issue from normal use.

Thanks for the reply.
I'll tell you about the play!
With the bike on the ground and wiggling the top of the wheel there is movement from side to side slightly , but only in certain places!?!
It can feel rigid when wiggled but a certain part of the wheel will have wiggle when i check all around.
I took the wheel off and checked the axle and there seems to be play on the driveside but not the non driveside.
I tried tightening the nut on the non driveside and it made the wheel feel stiff and catchy.
I am quite new to bike mechanics but in my opinion i think the driveside bearing is going.

I have not taken the freewheel off yet though and inspected the driveside.

I too have seldom heard of these bearings failing. I would think removing the FW and reinstalling the wheel to inspect the adjustment of the hub may be a good idea. if your unfamiliar with bicycle maintenance I suggest finding a competent and qualified mechanic. these Mavic hubs need special tools to remove and install the bearings.

these may help but again you need special tools for this job.

Well the easy thing i can now try is adjusting the hubs while still in the bike frame, which i didn't know!

Bikes: Ruckelshaus Randonneur, Specialized Allez (early 90's, steel), Ruckelshaus Path Bomber currently being built

Play in the bearings doesn't necessarily mean they're bad. Might just need adjusting. IMO, Mavic hubs are among the finest ever made, and I have 3 sets of wheels built with 571/2 hubs that you'd have to pry from my cold, dead hands.

Adjusting bearing "run out" just takes a single cone wrench, and it's easier to do when the wheel is in the frame.

I have just checked the bike again and it is strange it is a 12inch arc of the rim that has play and only there!
Any ideas at all?

find someone in your area who is familiar with these hubs.

if they were my wheels I may follow the directions for the hubs being 'tight' then try and adjust them.

Ok thanks. I tried my local bike shop but they wanted 80 euros to replace the bearings!
I have bought the bearings online for 5 Euros and if the adjustment doesn't work then i'll try and find someone else local who can do it for a better price , and if the bearings are gone then i can give them the bearings to fit for me.
