Every four years is a Paris-Brest-Paris year, and this is one. People who want to attend PBP must qualify by riding a super randonneuring brevet series the year-of PBP, meaning now. Brevets of 200k, 300k, 400k, and 600k must be completed by mid June in order to qualify for the PBP that runs in August. That could be part of why you're hearing more about brevets. I'm new to this myself, so I can't tell you if randonneuring has grown lately in the States. I do know the numbers at PBP have been on the increase since the '70s.
