Maintenance of FS bikes has never presented a difficulty to me - as long as you have the proper tools (which are generally commonly available) it's no big deal.

I do however disagree with your apparently foregone conclusion that VPP climbs better than single pivot. It depends more significantly upon suspension geometry and shock tuning, and most significantly upon what feels best for the rider.
