Shimano R086 shoes and 105 pedals are a great way to get into a road set up without dropping too much cash. Those shoes are on sale pretty often and the 105s are the same thing as the Ultegras for $50 less and only a few grams more. You can also try the R540s.

I know shoes are personal, but if you try them on and like them then you can find lots good deals online.
