My Chorus and Athena drivetrains are not as quiet as my old Ultegra 6500 group. But Ultegra is not Italian.
My "backup" bike got all Campy 2011 components: Chorus shifters, the rest Athena with the carbon crankset. I can't tell a big difference from the 2009 Chorus on my primary bike. The 2011 stuff shifts at least as well, if not a bit faster. I'm quite satisfied with it. I got mine from Ribble Cycles in the UK. Lots cheaper than in the states.
If pricing ever gets prohibitive for Campy parts, I'll probably try SRAM.
So far pricing on Campy and SRAM are close enough that pricing isn't an issue.
