This has happened alot with Rival. I'm just waiting for my right shifter to break in the same way.

A few weeks ago I was at the end of a ride and noticed a guy with 2 slightly different brifters. I asked him and yes, he was a victim of the "little metal part" which broke and the shifter came off the bike.

I hope when it happens I'm not 50 hilly miles out.
